Grand Opera by the Shore Concert & Festival
September 11th - 13th at Ocean Grove
Dear Advertiser and Friend of the New Jersey State Opera,
We’d like you to be among the first to know about our plans for Destination: Opera! - a weekend long opera festival taking place September 11th through 13th in Ocean Grove, and we’d like to offer you an opportunity to participate!
The New Jersey State Opera will be publishing a beautiful keepsake program and guide of the 2nd Destination: Opera! Festival. These books will be given out throughout the three-day event.
♫ Friday, September 11th — Destination: Opera! will kick off on Friday, September 11, 3 pm at Bishop Janes Tabernacle with a panel discussion on building a statewide Festival of the Arts at the Jersey Shore, lead by NJS Opera Artistic Director Dr. Jason Tramm. At 8 pm, the NJSO will host a reception at Parlor Gallery, 717 Cookman Ave, Asbury Park, NJ 07712.
♫ September, 12th — Verdi composed the Requiem in honor of the passing of Alessandro Manzoni, the Italian poet and novelist who died in 1873. While Verdi was quite sincere in his desire to memorialize Manzoni, he was also aware of the commercial possibilities for the Requiem. At the same time that he was negotiating with the Church and the city of Milan to underwrite the premier and allow women singers to appear, he was arranging publication and performance royalties. The premier took place in May, 1874 in San Marco with two concert performances that same year. Requiem was greeted with such great enthusiasm that in the following year it was performed in Paris, London, Vienna and America. The Requiem had become one of Verdi’s most popular compositions.
♫ Sunday, September 13th — La Serva Padrona was originally premiered in September of 1733 and is a comedic opera which literally means The Servant Mistress. It’s an opera in two acts with a bass, soprano and “mute” actor.
